How to Use Pine on cyberserver.uml.edu
Type pine [hit return]
The Pine Main menu will be displayed as follows:
To issue any of these commands from Pine, you just type the letter associated with the command.
For example, to see Folder List, type 'L'. This will display the list of all your folders.
To compose a message, type 'C' from the main menu and you will be taken to the compose message screen.
Composing a message:
To: The e-mail address of the person you are sending the message.
Cc: The e-mail address of the persons to whom you are sending copies. Separate their addresses with commas if there are more than one. Leave blank if no copies are to be sent.
Attachments: This is an advanced feature of Pine that allows you to attach documents created with other programs.Subject: A one line description of your message.
Message Text: This is where you type the actual message. You can edit the information using the arrow keys to move up, down, left and right. The delete key (or backspace) will delete the character in-front of the cursor. You can spell-check the message using control-t.
To read your messages, type ' I ' from the main menu. This will list the files in your Inbox.
You can read a message by first highlighting it using up and down arrow keys and then hitting return key.
The messages may be prefixed by any of the following:
+ means that the message was sent directly to you. The message was not sent to you as a carbon copy, and it is not from a generated list of e-mail addresses.
A means that you have sent a reply regarding the message to the sender.
N means that you have a new unread message.
D means that you have marked the message to be deleted (when you quit Pine).
* means the message is important. You have "flagged" or marked the message to get your attention at a later time (flagged options -- New, Deleted, Answered, or Important).
To Reply to a message, type 'R' while reading the message. Pine asks you whether you want to include the original message in the reply.
